Empowering Local Governance for Sustainable Economic

Project in brief

The SUSTAINET project aims to establish Green Business Innovation Centres (GBICs) to support municipalities in fostering a green economy, protecting the environment, and encouraging community-driven innovation and collaboration. The project focuses on three key areas: promoting green economic growth, adopting sustainable practices to protect the environment, and engaging communities to drive innovation and entrepreneurship. The initiative is implemented by a consortium of five partners: the Athens University of Economics and Business – Research Center (AUEB-RC), Cleantech Bulgaria Ltd., the Academy of Athens, the University of Limassol, and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The project is structured around five work packages: developing sustainable governance models for municipalities (WP1), creating self-assessment tools for municipalities to improve sustainability efforts (WP2), supporting businesses in implementing green strategies (WP3), upgrading training programs for vocational and higher education in green skills (WP4), and promoting collaboration through training sessions, webinars, and events (WP5). Expected outcomes include a methodology for green transitions for municipalities, a self-assessment tool, a support program for businesses, enhanced green skills training, and the creation of a transnational network for local governance actors.

Ultimately, SUSTAINET will help municipalities transition to a green economy, establish circular economy models, and build lasting networks for innovation and sustainability.
